Soft Sensory Box with Stuffed Animals, Rattle and Mirror

4.7 · 120 ratings

A fabric cube with a different idea on every face and eight small objects living inside it. It is the toy we reach for first when someone asks what to give a baby who has just learned to sit.

$11.99

Price and stock are held by the partner store and can change at any time.

  • Eight objects, each sized for a hand that has only recently learned to close around things, and each one finished differently.
  • The chicken squeaks, the cow rattles, and a baby works out which is which by shaking them one after another.
  • A paper panel behind the rabbit crackles under a palm, the sound that holds attention longer than any melody at this age.
  • The carrot pulls out of its pocket and goes back in, a tiny in-and-out puzzle that comes before any shape sorter.
  • Reinforced seams keep the box standing up on its own, so it stays a container rather than collapsing into a pile.

Why we made it this way

A sensory box works because it is several toys that happen to share an address. A baby who loses interest in the mirror turns the cube and finds the tail; a baby who is tired of pulling the carrot shakes the cow instead. Nothing has to be reset by an adult between rounds.

We kept the whole thing soft on purpose. At this stage a toy spends as much time against a cheek or in a mouth as it does in a hand, and a fabric box can go through a wash and come back without losing its shape.

It folds flat enough for a changing bag, which is why most of the use it gets is away from home. A car seat, a waiting room, a grandparent's floor: the box gives a baby eight familiar things in an unfamiliar place.
